When one thinks of penguins, it is often a simplified black and white bird that comes to mind. In reality, they are remarkably varied and their plumage has so much life, if you take the time to look closely. I wanted to have a fresh look at the four penguins of the Falkland Islands and depict them as intimate portraits, focussing on their plumage and the way the light catches the feathers to bring out the details. It turned out to be quite a challenge to capture their differing characters and I found I reworked the designs again and again until I was content that I had done my best to capture the unique traits of each species. Along with the penguins, I couldn’t resist illustrating a Black-browed Albatross pair, they are stunning creatures. These new bird portraits will form part of my range of prints for the upcoming season. Now lets hope the printing and shipping runs along smoothly and they arrive in time for a busy summer season.
